Tennessee, due to its geographical location and many resources was a key state during the Civil War and of the utmost importance. This was due to the East-West Railroad, the Cumberland, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers, in addition to this Tennessee had more industrial manufacturing of iron works, munitions factories, gun powder mills, and copper mines than the rest of the Southern States. It was also considered a “Breadbasket” state because of its resources in farm commodities. In February 1861, the vote to succeed went before Tennessee legislature and was rejected, it later went to vote again in June 1861 and was passed, making Tennessee the last state to succeed form the Union. There were more battles fought in Tennessee than any other state except Virginia. Among these battles were 6 decisive and 3 of the bloodiest battles fought during the Civil War. Tennessee was the second most populous state in the South thus turning out more Confederate Soldiers than any other state except Virginia it also provided more Union Soldiers than all the other Southern states combined. That is why Tennessee was truly a “state divided” during the Civil War. Furthermore Tennessee was the only Confederate state not to go through Federal Reconstruction this is because it never stopped being under Federal Law.
